A day out on West Mainland Orkney

IMG_20170519_065242928Today, I was so happy to have a day off school because it was a teacher training strike day. I was organised (for once) and put the moth trap out the night before and I caught 23 Hebrew Characters. Which was a shame because I was hoping for something different…

After the moth trap me and my dad went to West Mainland with dad’s guests. (Dad’s a tour guide). We first stopped at Skara Brae. Whilst dad and the guests went looking at the ancient town, I did some seawatching. Only to find Great Skua, Arctic Terns, Guillemots & Razorbills.

After that we went to the RSPB loons hide and saw a gorgeous summer plumage Black-tailed Godwit. Our other sightings were Gadwall, Little Grebe on nest, Whooper Swan, Shoveler with 9 ducklings & a Water Rail calling.

After the Loons we went to Marwick Head, to see Puffins & Skuas. I didn’t see Puffins, but the group did whilst I was seawatching. Though the only Skua we saw was Great Skua (Bonxie).

Next we went to Skail & Harray Loch, Brodgar Pools & the Ring of Brodgar. We saw Goldeneye, Scaup, Common Sandpiper, Pintail, Shelduck & Stonechats. Then finally zipped out to see the Stones of Stenness. We saw Common Terns and Seals there. So in other words a good day out.

My New Blog

So I have decided to start a new blog about the things I do. I will be posting Patchwork Challenge monthly updates. Holiday posts, when I see rare birds and when I ever want to simply just do a blog post. Hopefully all with pictures.   Also I probably wouldn’t be posting daily, so no promises on daily updates. Thanks to all the people who have already viewed or visited!! I do appreciate it.
